Small business owners from Kiambu County received a major boost today as the Department of Trade and Investments actively took part in a high-impact business clinic during the 2nd Annual Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) Conference, Exhibition, and Awards hosted by the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA).
The event, which brought together entrepreneurs, policy-makers, and business leaders, offered a golden opportunity for Kiambu-based SMEs, to receive expert advice and connect with networks that could drive their growth.
The business clinic was graced by Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSMEs Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya, who praised the efforts made by counties like Kiambu in supporting small enterprises.
“Our focus is to ensure that entrepreneurs, especially at the county level, are supported with easier access to licenses, affordable financing, and useful training. Over 30,000 MSMEs across the country have already been brought on board this year through digital registration,” said CS Oparanya.
Kiambu’s Department of Trade was among the most active exhibitors, talking to hundreds of business people and giving them step-by-step guidance on starting and running legal businesses.
Ms. Ann Wambui, who leads the Business Licensing Department in Kiambu, said they were working hard to make processes easier for small business owners.
“Licensing should not be seen as a barrier. It is the first step to building a successful and trusted business. We are here to help,” she said.
According to a report from KEPSA, small and medium enterprises make up approximately 98percent of all businesses in Kenya, and they contribute around 33.8percent to the national economy. These figures show just how vital SMEs are to counties like Kiambu.
KEPSA CEO Ms. Carole Kariuki, said the goal of the conference was to empower businesses with tools for resilience.
“We are building a bridge between entrepreneurs and the resources they need, from market access to mentorship,” she said.
Entrepreneurs from Kiambu showcased a wide range of innovations, including value-added farm products, fashion items, and tech solutions.
The event also featured networking opportunities, expert panel discussions, and awards for outstanding SME performers.
The event highlighted Kiambu County’s rising role in nurturing business success. With continued support from both the county government and partners like KEPSA, local entrepreneurs are better equipped to expand their businesses, create jobs, and power the county’s economic future.
