Kiambu expands solar street lighting under Angaza Programme

The Kiambu County Government has intensified efforts of installing of solar-powered street lights under the Angaza Kiambu Programme, a flagship initiative aimed at improving security, supporting businesses, and enhancing access to public spaces across the county.

Information shared by the county government, shows that the programme has transformed towns, trading centers, villages and roads through the installation of thousands of solar street lights.

The project has become one of the county’s key development initiatives, with officials saying it has improved safety and extended business operating hours in many areas.

Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s administration says more than 22,000 solar street lights have already been installed across Kiambu County, with the programme expected to reach 24,000 installations by the end of the year. The county also estimates that the shift to solar energy has saved approximately Sh310 million in electricity costs.

Residents and business owners have welcomed the initiative, noting that well-lit streets have reduced cases of insecurity while enabling traders to operate for longer hours in the evening. The programme has also improved access to lighting in rural areas that are not connected to the national electricity grid.

County officials say the use of solar technology has significantly lowered installation and maintenance costs.  Unlike conventional street lights, the solar-powered units continue functioning during power outages and do not attract monthly electricity bills, making them a cost-effective solution for the county.

The initiative has also contributed to environmental conservation by promoting the use of clean and renewable energy while reducing dependence on electricity generated from non-renewable sources.

Speaking during an update on the programme, Governor Wamatangi said the county remains committed to expanding the project to ensure more residents benefit from improved security and economic opportunities.

“The Angaza Kiambu Programme is transforming our towns and villages by providing reliable solar lighting that enhances security, supports businesses and improves the quality of life for residents,” Wamatangi said.

The county government says the programme forms part of its broader agenda to modernize infrastructure, promote sustainable development and create a safer environment for residents and investors throughout Kiambu County.
