Kiambu, Judiciary join hands to rebuild burnt courts

The Kiambu County Government and the Judiciary have partnered to reconstruct the Kikuyu Law Courts, which were vandalised during the June protests.

This collaboration marks a critical step toward restoring access to justice and rebuilding confidence in public institutions within the region.

Governor Kimani Wamatangi hosted a high-level delegation from the judiciary at the county headquarters, led by Kiambu Presiding Judge Lady Justice Abigail Mushila, Kikuyu Law Courts Chief Magistrate Liz Gicheha, and the Kiambu Chapter of the Law Society of Kenya chairperson, Beth Fundi.

“We are committed to ensuring that justice services are restored to our people as quickly as possible,” Governor Wamatangi said.

The partnership comes as a response to the devastating fire that engulfed the Kikuyu Law Courts during the June protests.

The incident occurred when the courts were torched by goons during demonstrations in Kikuyu town.

Lady Justice Mushila expressed optimism about the partnership, saying that the fire has created significant challenges for the justice system, not only halting court proceedings but also complicating matters for those in custody awaiting their day in court.

“This collaboration will ensure we rebuild a modern facility that serves justice efficiently,” she said.

The county government has announced plans to rebuild the courts along with the construction of the administration block for Kikuyu Municipality, which was also damaged by the fire.

This coordinated approach is expected to optimise resource allocation and ensure faster restoration of essential services to the community.

The Kikuyu Law Courts serve a substantial population in Kikuyu Sub-County and its surrounding areas, making their restoration a priority for both the county government and the judiciary.

The collaborative rebuilding effort represents a commitment to restoring the rule of law and ensuring that justice services remain accessible to the people of Kikuyu Sub-County.

The partnership between the county government and the judiciary demonstrates a unified approach to addressing the challenges facing the justice system in the region.
