Kiambu waives medical bills for protest victims

The County Government of Kiambu has announced a full waiver of all medical bills for residents who sustained injuries during the recent protest activities across the county.

Speaking on Monday, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Services, Dr. Elias Maina, said the decision was reached following consultations with key stakeholders in the health and emergency response sectors.

He emphasised that the county’s move is aimed at cushioning families already grappling with the emotional and physical toll of the unrest.

“We are aware that many of our people were caught up in the unfortunate chaos and ended up in our health facilities, some with serious injuries. As a government, we are committed to ensuring that no resident is further burdened by the cost of medical care during such difficult times,” said Dr. Maina.

The waiver will apply to all treatment costs incurred in public health facilities across the county, including emergency services, surgeries, admissions, and post-treatment care. Dr. Maina further revealed that medical teams had been directed to provide timely and compassionate care without any demands for payment from the affected individuals.

The protests, which broke out in several towns within Kiambu County last week, left scores injured as demonstrators clashed with law enforcement officers. Several victims were rushed to nearby health centers, sub-county hospitals, and Kiambu Level 5 Hospital for urgent care.

Residents have welcomed the move, terming it a relief for families already strained by the impact of the unrest.

“I brought a friend here at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital after she was hurt by a gunshot during the Saba Saba protest. Hearing that we don’t have to pay gives us great relief,” said Jonah Mwaura, a resident of Kiambu constituency.

The county government has also called for calmness and urged residents to seek peaceful means of expressing their concerns.

Dr. Maina assured that medical facilities remain on high alert to respond to any emergencies that may arise.
