The Kirinyaga county security committee has issued a warning to residents in flood-prone areas, following an advisory from the Kenya Meteorological Department, predicting intense downpours, flash floods, lightning strikes, strong winds and property damage.
Led by the county commissioner, Hussein Allasow, they called on residents especially in Mwea Rice irrigation scheme and part of Ndia constituency to be vigilant in order to protect their lives and their property.
“The two areas have experienced floods in the past and the security team in partnership with Kenya Red Cross has activated an emergency team to assess the situation and deal with any possible cases flooding in the region,” Allasow said.
Additionally, the county commissioner urged residents of landslide-prone areas in Ndia constituency and along River Thiba to relocate to safer areas and assured residents that the security team and other stakeholders are on high alert and have preparedness measures in place.
However, the Met department has issued a warning to Kirinyaga residents, urging them to be vigilant for flash floods, reduced visibility and sudden river rises.
“Residents in the mentioned areas are advised to be vigilant for potential flash floods and poor visibility, especially those leaving downstream rivers and along seasonal rivers, as sudden water may appear even without rain,” noted the weatherman.
