The ongoing construction of the Kiumbu–South Ngariama Bridge, now about 80 per cent complete, is expected to significantly improve connectivity and boost economic activities in the Mwea area.
The bridge is one of the key infrastructure projects being implemented to address transport challenges that have for years affected residents, particularly during the rainy season when crossing the river becomes difficult.
During an inspection of the project, Mwea Member of Parliament (MP), Mary Maingi, said the government remains committed to completing all ongoing development projects within the planned timelines, to improve the lives of residents.
She noted that investment in bridges is opening-up communities, reducing travel time and lowering transport costs for farmers and traders, whose livelihoods depend on reliable road networks.
Maingi said the Constituency has already completed several bridge projects, including Kiamanyeki, Ndindiruku–Kiumbu, Marurumo, Kiorugari and Kangiciri, while the Kiumbu–South Ngariama Bridge is nearing completion.
She added that Karira Bridge is also under construction and progressing well, expressing confidence that it will be completed soon.
“The bridges we are constructing are not just infrastructure projects. They are investments that will improve access to markets, schools, healthcare services and other essential facilities while supporting economic growth across Mwea,” she said.
The MP said the impact of the projects will extend beyond improving transport, noting that they will enhance trade, strengthen social services and support the region’s agricultural economy for generations to come.
