Mitchell Cotts Group has donated Sh1,082,000 to the Mombasa Sports Club Rugby Team ahead of the Driftwood Sevens Tournament, set to take place at the Mombasa Sports Club on July 26 and 27, 2025.
The firm is the official kit sponsor of the Mombasa team for the 2025 Driftwood Sevens, which is the first of six tournaments on the 2025 National Sevens Circuit calendar.
Following Driftwood, five more tournaments will take place: Prinsloo Sevens in Nakuru (August 2–3), Christie Sevens in Nairobi (August 16–17), Embu Sevens (August 23–24), Kabeberi Sevens (September 6–7), and Dala Sevens in Kisumu (September 13–14).
Mitchell Cotts Freight Kenya Limited Managing Director, Mr. Branko Ng’inja, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to nurturing youth talents through sports.
He noted that since 1990, the Driftwood Rugby Club has stood as a symbol of excellence, discipline, and resilience, values that Mitchell Cotts deeply respects and shares.
“At Mitchell Cotts Group, we believe that business success is not just measured by profit, but by purpose. Supporting this rugby team is part of that purpose, because sport builds character, strengthens communities and creates meaningful opportunities for youth both locally and internationally,” said the MD.
“Our decision to sponsor this team is also guided by something bigger than brand visibility; it’s about belief. Belief in young people, belief in sport as a force for transformation, and belief in our role as a business that uplifts the communities we serve.”
The MD further noted that rugby is not just a game as it also builds leaders, instills values, and brings people together across backgrounds and borders. He emphasised that by supporting the Driftwood Rugby Team, they are also investing in the scouting and growth of local and international talent.
“Most importantly, this partnership is aligned with our commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 3—Good Health and Well-being—by promoting physical activity, teamwork and mental wellness through sport,” expounded the MD.
The partnership, he added, also reflects SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals, because real impact happens when businesses, communities and institutions come together to invest in the next generation.
“We are proud to support Driftwood as the Official Jersey Partner for the 2025/2026 season, a meaningful step, however modest, in strengthening the only rugby club representing Kenya’s coast.”
The Company’s Sea Freight Manager, MrJoseph Ngugi, said they are keen to help the Kenya Rugby Union identify and nurture talent, create platforms for youth empowerment and cultivate goodwill in the communities.
“Rugby is more than a game; it’s a force for connection, confidence, and change. To the team, we see you’re potential. We believe in your future. And we’re honoured to stand with you as partners on this,” he said.
