Man accused of arson released on a bond of Sh2 million

A man charged with four counts of arson and a further four of malicious damage to property.

has been released on a Sh2 million bond by an Iten court pending hearing of the case.

Pius Yano appeared before Iten principal magistrate Emily Kigen and pleaded not guilty to burning four houses, three kitchens, two stores and destroying four perimeter fences valued at Sh1.6 million.

He was charged that on January 16 this year at Korongoi sub-location, Kapcherop division of Marakwet West sub-county, he, with others not before court willfully and unlawfully burned a house, kitchen and store belonging to Truphena Chemitei valued at Sh415,500.

He was also charged that on the same day he burnt a house, a kitchen and a store worth Sh395,920 belonging to Walter Chemitei; a house and kitchen valued at Sh235,850 belonging to Ronald Kiprop and a house worth Sh173,900 belonging to Johanna Kang’ethe.

Yano also faced four charges of malicious damage to property after he was accused of damaging a fence worth Sh152,000 belonging to Ms. Chemitei, another one worth Sh157,060 belonging to Mr. Chemitei, a fence worth Sh45,000 belonging to Kiprop, and a fence worth Sh59,500 belonging to Kang’ethe.

The accused was released on a bond of Sh2 million or remanded at Tambach prison in case he doesn’t raise the bond. The case will be mentioned on February 19 and heard on March 2 this year.
