The government has extended the street lighting system in Masalani town roads up to the Boma Yangu affordable housing project in Masalani town, Ijara Sub-County, Garissa County.
Speaking to KNA, youth leaders Abdi Hussein Noor, Daud Mohamed, and Jamal Mohamed Ali highlighted the newly installed streetlights in Masalani town, made possible through the courtesy of Garissa County Senator Abdul Mohamed Haji.
The youth said Masalani town is now safer, noting that construction of the Boma Yangu affordable housing programme, which includes 372 units and was launched by President William Ruto, has begun. They called on residents to acknowledge the government’s efforts in advancing development in Ijara Sub-County.
While residents welcome the improvements, they raised concerns over Mathenge trees (Jurisplora), whose roots damage tarmac roads and household piping systems. Residents urged the Ministry of Environment to remove the trees, which deplete soil nutrients and hinder growth of other vegetation.
The community also warned that Mathenge thorns pose a health risk. For instance, if a diabetes patient is pricked by a thorn, it could lead to severe complications, including potential loss of the affected hand. Livestock, such as goats and sheep, also suffer from the thorny trees.
Residents called for urgent action to remove the trees to ensure the safety of people, livestock, and the integrity of the town’s infrastructure.
