Muhoroni Constituency Member of Parliament James Koyoo has issued bursaries to 2,380 needy and vulnerable students in various higher learning institutions from the NG-CDF kitty.
The legislator issued a joint cheque of Sh25 million with 68 per cent of the amount benefiting 2150 college and university students under the normal bursary scheme while the rest shared among 230 students under the University Special Courses Scholarship Program.
Through this program, Muhoroni NG-CDF offers full scholarships to needy students admitted to study Law, Architecture, Medicine and Surgery, and Engineering in various universities across the country.
Since its inception in 2014, the initiative has made it possible for some 31 doctors, 63 engineers, 19 architects and 16 quantity surveyors among many other professionals to pursue their education.
“The University Special Courses Scholarship Programme supports bright students from downtrodden families and we have managed to produce many other professionals so far,” Koyoo said.
Koyoo, who presided over the disbursement of the bursary at Nyangoma Chief’s Camp on Friday, said he remains dedicated to investing in education as a means to foster human capital and support the empowerment of local residents.
Beneficiaries were drawn from Miwani, Ombeyi, Chemelil/Tamu, Masogo/Nyangoma and Muhoroni/Koru wards with Masogo/Nyangoma and Miwani having the highest number of student beneficiaries respectively.
He was accompanied at the event by Muhoroni Deputy County Commissioner Abdihakim Jubat and other education stakeholders from the Sub-County.
Muhoroni NG-CDF disburses bursaries in national schools, special-course universities, vulnerable students, colleges, universities and secondary schools.
The secondary school students benefited from the Sh24 million bursary disbursed from the same kitty in January, with recipients including learners in both day and boarding schools as well as students living with disabilities.
Koyoo further announced a partnership between the Muhoroni NG-CDF and the KCB Foundation to support 141 students pursuing technical courses at the Ramogi Institute of Advanced Technology (RIAT), in an initiative valued at Sh10 million.
Besides the bursary programme, the MP said the NG-CDF has procured new buses for three schools – Our Lady of Peace Muhoroni Secondary School, St Boniface Magare Secondary School, and Olik Oliero Secondary School, which will be unveiled when schools reopen next year.
He concluded, “I am doing this as a dream gift to my constituents and it is not something I am doing for political mileage.”
