In the wake of Wednesday’s protests that left major towns across the country devastated, the Murang’a Youth Service (MYS) has stepped up efforts to restore order and cleanliness in Murang’a town.
The youth, employed under an initiative launched by Murang’a County Governor Dr. Irungu Kang’ata, have been working diligently to clear streets that were obstructed during the protests.
MYS supervisor Eric Macharia highlighted the program’s commitment to efficiency and community impact, noting that over the past few days, MYS teams have been clearing roads, collecting debris, and rehabilitating public spaces across the town.
“Since this is a county-sponsored program, we respond to cleaning requests immediately. We prioritize the most affected areas based on urgency,” said Macharia.
He explained that MYS follows a structured plan and rotating schedule to ensure services reach all parts of the county, adding that their role goes beyond just cleanup efforts.
“MYS also plays a vital role in environmental conservation. For instance, during the recent World Environment Day, our members participated in a town-wide cleanup and tree-planting exercise in collaboration with local residents,” he said.
Macharia acknowledged that the job is not without its challenges, especially during periods of unrest.
“During protests, the workload increases significantly, but we do it because we believe in the impact we’re making,” he added.
As the situation gradually returns to normalcy, the work of these young men and women stands as a testament to the power of organized youth in building and maintaining clean and orderly communities.
