Nambale Member of Parliament Geoffrey Mulanya has called for protection of girl children in the community.
Speaking during the commissioning of a 300-capacity storey dormitory at Elwanikha Girls Secondary School in Nambale, Mulanya said the girls were more vulnerable, hence the need to be protected.
“Our girls are faced by many challenges in our community. We should stand up and protect them. Many of them have been denied further education by their parents immediately after they finish the first level. We should understand that the rights of girls and boys are equal and they all deserve protection,” he said.
Mulanya called on the security team to ensure frequent patrols to deal with the insecurity cases in the Sub County.
“We have been experiencing cases of insecurity due to disco matanga and on this, I want the security team to finish it. There are also people who are destroying our children with illicit brews. Those people have no space in our community and they should be arrested immediately,” he said.
The MP further urged the residents to support the government of the day and their leaders for better development.
“The president has brought development to our place because we agreed to work together. I want you to support your leaders so that they can lobby for more development that will help our children and our people, he said.
Mulanya at the same time advised the youth against being used by politicians to cause instability and chaos, urging them to refrain from such activities.
“There is an emerging trend that our youth are being used by politicians to cause chaos in events and functions. This should be stopped. We cannot support this and we are asking our youth to ensure that they are not being used in that manner,” he said.
He also cautioned the youth against improper use of social media, stating that misuse might deny them chances to develop.
“We are in an era where things have changed. Employers are checking your behaviours on social media for you to be given an opportunity. This should be a caution to you because your record might lead you to lose a chance of employment,” he said.
Nambale Sub County Assistant County Commissioner Okoth Wendo asked all the stakeholders to work together to improve education in the area.
“Let’s ensure that we come together to support academics. This should be a collective responsibility from students, teachers, parents and all stakeholders. When we make the environment conducive to our children, we can see good results from them,” he said.
Wendo asked the youth to use social media to make money and not to plan and cause chaos in the county.
“We appreciate that our youth have access to social media and are using it. Let us use it to make money through engaging in productive activities. Let’s not use them as an arena of ill characters and other activities that can cause insecurity in our county,” he said.
He urged the parents to ensure they use established and proper ways to lodge complaints when they are not satisfied by the performance of a school.
“The Ministry of Education has set up a proper mechanism to address issues related to our schools. If you are not satisfied by the performance of a teacher in school, it is good to approach the office of education in the area and local administration instead of confronting the school,” he said.
The commissioned dormitory was constructed through the NG-CDF fund and cost about Sh20 million.
