A student who was on the verge of missing to join Maranda high school in 2022 has repayed an act of charity from a total stranger by registering sterling performance in 2025 KCSE examination.
Denis Otieno Ochieng together with his “God- sent -mother” Everlyne Wafula had everything to smile about after he scored an impressive A plain of 83 points in the just released KCSE results.
The relationship between Denis and the foster mother Everlyn Wafula began strangely in February 2022 when he was brought for admission in form one by his biological mother who is a single mother and a vegetable vendor in Siaya.
“I had coincidentally come to Maranda to talk to the school principal about payment of fumigation services I had offered at the school when I saw a woman sitting across the waiting bay fighting back tears in the presence of her son,” Everlyn recalled
She disclosed that she developed interest on the crying mother and requested to talk to her in private to understand her predicament as they both waited to see the school principal Dr Edwin Namachanja.
“The crying lady who is the biological mother of Denis revealed to me that she had been turned away from the admission desk because her child lacked school fees and other basic necessities indicated in the school admission letter and her only hope to give her son a decent education now lay on the hands of the school principal whom she had sought to see,” said Everlyne
Everlyne disclosed that when she got an opportunity to see the principal, she shelved her own interests of pursuing for her payment but instead presented the case of a mother and her son who lacked school fee whom she had left outside on the waiting bay, asking the principal to allow the boy to be admitted with the promise that she will pay the boys fee throughout the four years.
“The mother of Denis told me she had only Sh5,000 and I also had Sh15,000 on me so the principal who had invited them in allowed me to buy uniform while the school provided beddings and other utilities for the boy to be admitted as I organized to pay his fees later,” Everlyne revealed.
The soft spoken Denis who sat his KCPE at Ronald Ngala primary school in Nairobi and scored 389 marks maintained excellent results throughout the four years and is hoping to pursue a degree in Medical surgery. “He has been humble since he joined form one and has never asked for anything extra outside his school shopping. He always says he is fine when I inquire to know what he lacked,” said Everlyne.
“Today when I found out that he had passed with flying colours I had to rush to their rural home in Alego Siaya from Bungoma to pick him for celebrations. He has done us proud and he deserves all our continued support,” she said
Everlyne Wafula who hails from Bungoma county has asked the county government of Siaya and Maranda high school old boy association to support the university education of Denis as paying for the degree course could be out of her reach.
On his part, Denis thanked God, his God-sent Mum, his mother and teachers at Maranda for supporting him and enabling him achieve top grade.
Maranda high school registered a mean grade of 10.2 with a total of 101 students scoring A plain, a further 184 A- with over 550 obtaining direct university entry grades.
