New bridge to ease transport in Mwea

Construction of a modern Karira Bridge along River Thiba in Mwea West is set to end decades of fear and disruption during rainy seasons, while improving connectivity and access to healthcare and rice markets.

Residents of Mwea can now breathe a sigh of relief following the commencement of the project along the Ngurubani–Nguka–Kagio road, which is currently under construction.

The new bridge will replace the old, narrow structure that has for years endangered lives and disrupted transport whenever River Thiba swells, bursts, or overflows its banks during the rainy seasons.

Speaking on behalf of residents, bodaboda rider Henry Ngondo said the old bridge had caused numerous challenges and fears, with some vehicles even plunging into the river.

“A lot of people have been taken to hospital with injuries caused on the bridge, while others suffer trauma due to fear when crossing it,” he said.

Ngondo also noted that parents have long feared for the safety of their school-going children, especially during the rainy season when the bridge becomes more dangerous. He expressed optimism about the new project, saying it will enhance safety and ease transport once completed.

“We are very happy with this project. It has been a long time since we heard about it, but now we can see progress with machinery already on site,” he added.

Furthermore, he explained that due to the narrowness of the current bridge, vehicles are often forced to wait and give way to each other, increasing the risk of accidents.

Another resident, Karanja Waramu, said the new bridge will ensure year-round access, ending disruptions to daily activities, particularly for rice farmers and patients seeking services at Karira Mission Hospital.

He noted that the lack of barriers and the narrow structure had previously led to several vehicles plunging into River Thiba, with some people nearly drowning before being rescued.

Waramu added that once completed, the bridge will significantly improve connectivity and enable farmers in the Mwea Irrigation Scheme to access markets for their rice produce more efficiently.

The road and bridge project is expected to enhance mobility, stimulate economic growth, attract investment, and improve livelihoods for residents of Nguka, Ndorome, Karira, and surrounding areas. Residents have called on the government to ensure the project is completed within the stipulated timeline.
