Nyandarua youth volunteer to clean town

A group of youths from Ngano village in Charagaita Ward in Ol-Joro Orok Constituency has launched an environmental programme in the area to promote environment conservation.

The clean-up drive that began at Ngano shopping Centre is expected to be expanded to nearby shopping centres with the youths claiming they have been neglected by the government.

Team Leader Kamau Waithera and Muturi Ngugi, said they have volunteered to carry out the activities to encourage their peers to embrace environment conservation and challenged the County government of Nyandarua to enroll jobless youths in such programmes to help them eke out a living.

They said it was unfortunate that most shopping centres in the area have been neglected.

“We are calling on the county government and the MCAs to give us services so that we can feel the value of our taxes. Alternatively, we can mobilise the business community to defy paying taxes because we feel neglected and lack even the basic amenities,” said Muturi

They opened clogged drainages, cleared bushes along roads within the town and also collected garbage.

Apart from being just a clean-up exercise, the event served as a platform for empowerment and while at the Arboretum, youths engaged in team-building sessions designed to foster leadership, innovation and unity.

The youths at the same time lamented that the majority of business people were being forced to close their shops early since a floodlight installed by the county government was faulty.

This, they observed, posed a serious security issue as criminals may take advantage of the darkness to steal from shops.
