Nyong’o flags off Sh18 million worth of tools for vocational training centres

Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o today launched distribution of machines and equipment worth Sh18 million to Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) in the county.

The exercise targeting 28 VTCs, is a move intended to expand and anchor hands-on training for more than 6,500 learners within the county.

The governor, speaking at the flagging-off ceremony at Kisumu City Hall, said the initiative targets to equip young people with industry-related skills to spur job creation and entrepreneurship.

“This is more than just a handover of tools,” said Prof. Nyong’o. “It is a declaration of our determination to empower our youth, strengthen the technical skills sector, and steer Kisumu towards a self-reliant and prosperous future.”

The equipment, he said, will be distributed across all eight sub-counties to support courses such as electrical installation, plumbing, garment making, welding, beauty therapy, and Information Communication Technology (ICT).

He added that the investment was in line with the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) model, which prioritizes practical learning to ensure graduates are ready for the job market.

The governor termed each piece of equipment as a seed that can grow into small enterprises, innovations, or skilled employment opportunities.

He encouraged trainees to fully utilise the resources, adding that the technical skills acquired at the institutions are set to open opportunities locally and abroad.

“Learn with commitment, innovate without fear, and remember that the skills you gain here can transform not only your life but also your community,” he told the youth.

Prof Nyong’o, further, pledged to expand access to vocational training to strengthen links between graduates and the labour market opportunities both in Kenya and overseas.

The distribution comes weeks after a vocational training stakeholders’ meeting at Akado VTC, where ways of enhancing CBET and technical education in Kisumu were discussed.
