One killed in Katito road accident

One person died while several others were injured following a grisly road accident along the Kendu Bay–Katito road, Thursday afternoon.

The crash occurred at about 3.45pm in the Asao area in Nyakach Sub-County, when a pick-up truck travelling from Kendu Bay towards Katito lost control, veered onto the opposite lane and collided head-on with an oncoming matatu vehicle.

Confirming the incident, Kisumu County Police Commander Hillary Toroitich said the matatu, belonging to Bukimi Sacco, was carrying 17 passengers, including juveniles, while the pickup had two occupants.

The impact, he said, left one person dead and several passengers with serious injuries, mainly fractures to the legs and arms, as well as head injuries, while others sustained minor body injuries.

“All the injured were rushed to Nyakach Sub-county Hospital for emergency treatment before being referred to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) in Kisumu for specialised care,” he said.

The Kisumu County Department of Medical Services in a statement to the media confirmed the fatality and said four county ambulances were swiftly dispatched to the scene to evacuate and stabilise the casualties.

The county government conveyed its condolences to the family of the deceased and wished a quick recovery to those injured, commending emergency and medical teams for their prompt response.

Both vehicles were towed to Nyakach Police Station pending inspection as police visited the scene and launched investigations into the cause of the accident.

Motorists have been urged to exercise caution, following the heavy traffic on the roads as schools reopen on Monday.
