Narok County government has announced the establishment of 20 livestock saleyards across the county to enhance business and improve the livelihoods of the local traders.
Addressing traders during the opening of a saleyard at Mulot market in Narok West sub-county, governor Patrick Ole Ntutu noted that such development marks a significant milestone in supporting economic growth and improving market infrastructure thus urged the traders to fully utilize the facility to spur development in the area.
“Making the saleyard operational will definitely rejuvenate business activities, and this will in turn improve the socio-economic status of our people,” Ntutu said.
The governor revealed that in a month’s time, the traders will also be allocated the modern stalls being constructed around the saleyard to provide a descent working environment and accommodate other essential services required during the market days.
To ensure a conducive working environment, the Mulot saleyard will feature key amenities such as a county cess office, washrooms and a water drinking point for the livestock.
Ntutu expressed optimism that the new facility will boost county revenue collection, which currently stands at Sh150,000 per day, noting that the funds will be channeled towards improving service delivery and initiating other development projects.
“The revenue collected will help foster development projects and create job opportunities for many,” he said.
On a typical market day, traders at Mulot market are able to sell between 1,500 to 2,000 cows and 1,000 goats and sheep and this is expected to rise with the improved infrastructure.
