More than 200 households in Sabatia Sub- County have now access to clean and reliable water, following the commissioning of two major water projects.
The Kegondi and Nadiradi water projects, located in West Sabatia and Busali Wards respectively, were launched under the Vihiga County Climate Change Resilience Programme.
The Nadiradi Project was supported by the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) initiative and the Vihiga County Climate Change Fund (VCCF), as part of efforts to promote climate resilience, improve health outcomes, and address persistent water shortages in rural areas.
The Kegondi Water Project features a 50,000-litre underground sump, a solar-powered pumping system, a 50,000-litre elevated steel tank, and a metered household distribution network, currently serving 100 households in West Sabatia Ward.
Located in Busali Ward, the Nadiradi Water Project serves over 100 households across six villages of Budira, Ludzu, Chatamilu, Lusiola, Jemude, and Mulundu.
It includes a 100,000-litre elevated steel tank connected to an existing borehole, supported by an 18-kilometre distribution network for household connections. The county Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo hailed the projects as long-term, sustainable solution to water challenges in the area.
“Access to clean water is a basic right,” said Dr. Ottichilo adding, “These projects reflect our commitment to delivering people-centred, climate-resilient solutions.”
Consequently, area residents have expressed their appreciation, noting that the water projects have relieved women and children from long walks to unsafe water sources and reduced the risk of waterborne diseases.
The governor urged community members to take ownership of the infrastructure to ensure sustainability and announced plans to expand household water connections.
Meanwhile, to date, 28 climate resilience projects have been rolled out across Vihiga County under FLLoCA and VCCF, addressing key areas such as water access, food security, and environmental conservation.
