Police arrest suspect, seize over 1,000 litres of illicit alcohol in Jomvu

Police in Jomvu Sub-County, Mombasa County, have arrested a suspect notorious for manufacturing illicit alcohol in the Bangladesh area and confiscated more than one thousand litres of the brew.

Jomvu Sub-County Police Commander Selina Chirchir said the seizure occurred over the past week following a credible tip-off from members of the public.

Accompanied by Deputy Sub-County Commissioner Dolphine Okondo during a media briefing, Chirchir stated that the ongoing operation will persist until illicit alcohol is completely eradicated from the area.

“The operation will continue without relent. We are determined to wipe out this menace in Jomvu,” Chirchir said.

She called on parents to closely monitor and guide their children, particularly during the ongoing half-term holiday, to shield them from alcohol and drug abuse.

Chirchir described illicit alcohol as a serious threat that ruins lives, families, marriages and the future of innocent children across the country.

The crackdown aligns with President William Ruto’s directive for a nationwide elimination and destruction of illicit brews and narcotic drugs to safeguard public health and security.

The arrested suspect, known for producing the illicit brew in a Bangladeshi slum within Jomvu, now faces charges related to manufacturing and being in possession of illicit liquor.

Authorities destroyed the confiscated consignment on site as part of efforts to prevent recirculation into the community.

Multi-agency teams continue to intensify operations in Jomvu and other parts of Mombasa County to curb the production, sale and consumption of unregulated alcohol.
