President Ruto announces construction of 1,500 affordable housing units in Butere

President Dr William Ruto has announced the construction of 1,500 affordable housing units in Butere Sub-County, Kakamega County as part of the National Affordable Housing Programme.

The President stated that the initiative aims to tackle the housing shortage and enhance living standards for Kenyans adding the project will be implemented on a 10-acre land owned by Kenya Railways in Butere town.

The land was officially identified for development following a request by area Member of Parliament Tindi Mwale, who appealed to the President to allocate it for the benefit of residents.

President Ruto said the project is part of his administration’s plan to ensure that every Kenyan, regardless of region has access to decent and affordable housing, noting that the initiative aims to provide shelter while also boosting the local economy by generating employment for numerous youths, suppliers, and artisans during construction.

“The Affordable Housing Programme is not just about homes—it’s about transforming communities, creating jobs, and restoring dignity for our people,” Ruto said. “We want every part of Kenya, including Butere, to benefit from the promise of development,” he added.

The Head of State made the announcement yesterday during his development tour of Kakamega County, where he also commissioned other key projects in health, infrastructure and education sectors.

He was accompanied by several leaders, among them Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli and Kakamega Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda.

The leaders welcomed the initiative saying the housing project would attract investors, expand the local economy and uplift the living standards of Butere residents.
