Public urged to embrace prisoners during upcoming festive season

Nanyuki Law Court Resident Magistrate Emmaculate Deche has called on the public to show love and acceptance to former inmates as they reintegrate into society after serving their sentences.

Speaking during a visit to Nanyuki GK Prison in Laikipia where she distributed gifts to inmates in preparation for the festive season, Ms Deche noted that many prisoners felt abandoned, particularly those with limited or no contact with their families.

“Some inmates feel left out and forgotten. It is important that we support them and make them feel part of the community again, regardless of their past mistakes,” she said.

Ms Deche stated the primary purpose of imprisonment was both retribution and rehabilitation.
“Jail serves the dual role of retribution for wrongdoing and facilitating change in the offender. Everyone deserves a second chance,” she stated.

She highlighted that the initiative came at a time when loneliness and isolation can be especially immense for inmates during the holiday period.

Nanyuki GK Prison Assistant Superintendent Esther Maina commended the ongoing rehabilitation programmes, revealing that inmates are being equipped with modern, marketable skills to enhance their employability upon release.

“Through various training initiatives, we are ensuring that when they complete their sentences, they have practical skills to secure jobs and rebuild their lives,” Ms Maina said.

The prison officials expressed hope that continued community support and reduced stigma will help lower crime rates and enable successful reintegration of the offenders.
