Grief engulfed Ogande village in Homa Bay town Sub County after a grade one pupil drowned in a pool of water in a quarry.
The minor identified as Jayden Blessing died yesterday as he was planning to take a bath.
Following the incident, area residents urged environmental agencies to help them regulate quarrying activities which have degraded the environment.
The residents said they have lodged complaints for quarrying to be controlled but their plea have fallen on deaf ears.
Jayden’s mother Dorcas Akoth said her son was with his siblings before he drowned.
The villagers said they are worried about the safety of their children.
Some families do not let their children to go out to play for fear of falling into the pits.
Ogande Village elder Alfred Okuku said a proposal was made for waste from sugar processing plants to be used to fill the gullies.
“A public participation proposed for Sukari Industries to be allowed to dump sugarcane waste in the quarries to help in filling the pits. But those who own the pits are yet to agree on this.” he said.
The father of the ill-fated minor Mr Samule Odoyo said he has tried to push for suspension of quarrying activities in the village.
“We need excavations to stop. I have told administrators from this area to help us push for it. We are yet to get answers.” he said.
