Residents of Ndhiwa benefit from establishment of technical institute

Residents of Ndhiwa Sub county are a delighted lot after the government allocated Sh85million to set up a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institute in the area.

Ndhiwa constituency Member of Parliament Martin Owino said that the institute which will be built at Ochol village will boost access to technical skills for the locals.

He said the national government was collaborating with the Ndhiwa constituency office to implement the project which will be a constituent college of Mawego National Polytechnic.

The legislator said the project will be completed in one year and will take about 800 students in the first batch.

“Residents and community need to support such institutions because they are they are the sources of self-employment. The technical skills youths will acquire will make them be job creators,” Owino said.

The legislator made the remarks during groundbreaking ceremony and was accompanied by the Principal of Mawego National Polytechnic John Abuto.

He said the project will improve businesses in the area and urged the locals to invest in real estate and other services

Abuto urged residents to support the project to boost economic empowerment for the youth.

“Residents must be ready to build houses which students will rent. They should also know that diverse business opportunities will come up,” Abuto said.

He said some of the courses to be offered will include plumbing, masonry, electrical installation, tile fixing and carpentry among others.

The Principal urged youths in the area not to focus only on the white-collar jobs but also get alternative jobs.

“Many youths will easily access jobs in affordable housing projects across the country. We need many of such training institutions to curb unemployment amongst the youths,” he said.

Abuto urged locals not to sell land but develop them for their economic benefit.

“You must be ready to undertake investments and take advantage of the project to develop,” he said.
