Residents urged to involve professionals in building works

Residents of Busia County have been advised to engage professionals in building and construction works in order to ensure safe structures.

Speaking during a public sensitization forum at a hotel in Busia, a Board Member of the National Construction Authority (NCA), Eng. Gilbert Arasa, noted that the construction field is the most abused, with non-professionals assuming roles of engineers, among others.

“We have seen cases where persons who have not been trained are involved and structures have collapsed,” he said, adding that collapsed buildings have caused many deaths.

Arasa warned that engaging non-professionals risked exposing building owners to murder or manslaughter in case such buildings collapse.

He further said that professionals are also key in guiding building owners on the right materials to be used for their works. “We have noted that in some instances people have bought building plans from nonprofessionals,” he said, adding that such initiatives have led to some buildings collapsing.

The Engineer at the same time, urged the National Government Administration Officers to assist the National Construction Authority in reporting those engaging non-professionals in construction works.

Arasa also said that the National Building Code 2024 is now in place after replacing the 1968 one, adding that the new building code, which became effective in March 2025, has taken into account the changing technologies, use of new materials and the issues of climate change.

The official also warned those using shortcuts in the construction to adhere to the new code.

“I want to urge all those engaging in construction works to read, understand and adhere to it,” he said, further cautioning them that they must use qualified personnel, registered by the National Construction Authority.
