RICM team inspects major infrastructure projects in Kiambu County

A team from the Central Regional Implementation Coordination and Management Committee (RICM) led by Regional County Commissioner Joshua Nkanatha, today conducted an extensive inspection of ongoing national government projects in Kiambu County, highlighting steady progress across key development sites.

The delegation’s tour on Wednesday covered several transformative projects, including the Tinganga and Githunguri Esp markets, the Ruiru Affordable Housing Project, and the Kahawa Sukari/Mwihoko Water Project.

The visit aimed to assess construction progress, ensure adherence to quality standards and set timelines, and engage local communities benefiting from the initiatives.

At Tinganga Esp market, a Sh55 million facility, construction has reached 75 percent completion and is expected to be finalised by February 2026. Once complete, the market will accommodate at least 300 traders, providing modern stalls and improved trading spaces designed to boost local commerce.

Meanwhile, at Githunguri Esp market, the project progress is at 35 percent completion. The Sh268 million two-storey structure will host up to 1,000 traders and is projected to be completed by March next year.

The project, which has engaged local workforce fully, has been lauded for creating jobs within the community and stimulating the area’s small-scale economy.

Commissioner Nkanatha noted that such projects represent the government’s ongoing commitment to equitable regional development.

“We are keen on ensuring that all government projects are completed within schedule and that local communities fully benefit from the opportunities created,” he said.

The team also toured the Ruiru Affordable Housing Project, a flagship initiative launched in March 2023 under the national Affordable Housing Programme. Scheduled for completion by March 2026, the development will feature 12 floors with 1,050 modern housing units catering to diverse family needs. The units comprise 30 bedsitters, 40 one-bedroom apartments, 60 compact two-bedroom units, 504 standard two-bedroom units, 336 two-bedroom ensuite apartments, and 80 spacious three-bedroom units.

Each residential wing will include two lifts, while the complex will host a kindergarten, a commercial wing with retail shops, and a health clinic. The project has employed 2,000 local youth and provides practical training opportunities for students pursuing construction-related courses.

The Regional Commissioner said the project would transform Ruiru, one of Kiambu’s fastest-growing town centres.

“Residents should take advantage of the affordable housing units once complete. This project not only addresses the housing deficit but also strengthens our local economy through job creation and business growth,” he stated.

Engineer Tuta Gabriel, from the State Department for Housing and in charge of housing projects in Kiambu County, affirmed the government’s dedication to ensuring timely delivery.        “The government is doing everything possible to keep its promise to provide decent and affordable housing to Kenyans,” he said.

The RICM team’s final stop was at the Kahawa Sukari/Mwihoko Water Project, a Sh400 million initiative nearing completion.

Implemented by the Ruiru-Juja Water and Sewerage Company, the project involves laying 168 kilometers of water distribution networks across Githurai’s Kiuu, Mwiki, and Kahawa Wendani areas.

Once operational next week, it will provide piped water to more than 50,000 residents in the expansive Mwihoko ward.

Commissioner Nkanatha said the project marks the end of years of reliance on water vendors.

“People here will finally enjoy a constant supply of piped water after years of buying from vendors. This is a major milestone in improving living standards in Githurai Sub-county,” he added.

The inspection tour reaffirmed the government’s ongoing commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability, and timely delivery of key development projects aimed at improving livelihoods and driving socio-economic growth across Kiambu County.

The initiatives align with President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) by promoting inclusive development, creating employment, and enhancing access to essential services for ordinary citizens.
