Controversy surrounding the construction of Nanyuki’s Jamia mosque escalated after a section of disgruntled members opposed to the construction moved to court.
Internal rift pitting a section of Muslim community over the proposed Sh26 million project has sparked divisions since the fundraiser on September 6 this year with a section expressing fears that the new facility would displace them or undermine their authority.
An initiative spearheaded by Muslim women in Nanyuki was to purchase a hearse and fencing of the Muslim Cemetery to secure it, which they had estimated to cost Sh10million.
“We called you to be part of our committee and we wanted you because of transparency, to put us on check so that we don’t misuse the funds, you have to decide if we are building the mosque or not,” said Nimmo Elmi, a member of those who was spearheading the fundsdrive in Nanyuki.
However, a well-wisher pledged to support the fencing initiative hence the Sh26 million collected during the fundraise diverted to construct the religious center.
Speaking in a public baraza convened by Laikipia East Deputy County Commissioner Patrick Muli, the aggrieved members asked to be allowed to continue with the construction project.
Muli and other security officials present, warned that the Mosque would be shut down if the conflicts persisted.
“We don’t want to hear wrangles in this mosque, if there is any, we will close down this mosque as government,” cautioned Muli.
He urged members to unite and pave way for the construction of the mosque.
“If there some members you wish to replace, hold a meeting to remove them, when the committee is ready, decide on when you wish to start the construction of the mosque,” said the administrator.
