Ongoing roadworks along Gichocho–Ndumberi Road promise to improve connectivity, drainage, and economic activity as residents and workers witness tangible progress.
Progress is being felt along the Gichocho–Ndumberi Road, where grading, murraming, and compaction works are currently underway on the previously untarmacked section.
The project is part of an ongoing infrastructure improvement plan spearheaded by Kiambu MP Machua Waithaka, aimed at improving rural connectivity and enhancing road usability, especially during rainy seasons.
The road upgrade includes paving of drainage channels and installation of culverts in areas most affected by water logging. These drainage enhancements are expected to boost road durability and reduce maintenance costs in the long term.
Speaking at the site on Tuesday, area MP Machua Waithaka said, “We’re committed to building sustainable road infrastructure. This road has long affected movement for residents and traders alike. These works are just the beginning. We want to make sure every village is accessible, every season.”
According to Kiambu Roads Office records, the Gichocho–Ndumberi Road serves over 2,000 daily users, including school children, farmers, boda boda riders, and small traders. The road also links three wards named, Ndumberi, Ting’ang’a, and Riabai—boosting local commerce and easing access to markets and health centers.
Justin Sawe, a machine operator on-site, shared his thoughts on the project’s progress, “We’re doing around 300 meters of compaction per day. By the end of next week, the most impassable sections will be fully accessible. It’s fulfilling to be part of a project that actually changes lives.”
Residents expressed their appreciation and optimism for what this upgrade means for daily life and the local economy. Mary Wambui, a vegetable vendor from Gichocho, remarked: “During the rainy season, we used to carry our produce on our backs. Boda bodas couldn’t pass. Now we can already feel the difference even though it’s not finished.”
The roadworks, which span a few kilometers, are expected to be completed in the next three weeks, weather permitting. Drainage and culvert installations are nearing completion, while the compaction phase is well underway.
Waithaka emphasized that the Gichocho–Ndumberi Road is only one of several feeder roads earmarked for improvements under his current term. “Infrastructure is the foundation of growth. We will continue working with county engineers and the national government to unlock every corner of Kiambu,” he said.
As the final layers of murram are pressed into place and drainage systems take shape, the transformation of the Gichocho–Ndumberi Road signals more than just infrastructure as this is a step toward easier mobility, improved trade, in different conners of Kiambu County.
