Rogers Bwosi Foundation Scholarship beneficiaries set to join University

Twenty beneficiaries of the Rogers Bwosi Foundation scholarship programme who sat for last yearโ€™s national examinations are set to join university this year following support from the community-based initiative.

The students were commissioned on Thursday, March 12, 2026, by the foundationโ€™s chairman Rogers Bwosi during an event held at Mungavo PAG in Hamisi Sub- County, Vihiga County. The 20 students are part of a total of 53 beneficiaries who have been supported under the scholarship programme since its inception.

Speaking during the event, the Principal of Samson Mmaitsi Senior School, Robert Wafula, said the scholarship programme had played a significant role in addressing the long-standing challenge of lack of school fees that had affected many learners in the community.

Wafula noted that many students from the area had previously struggled to complete their education due to financial constraints, forcing some to miss classes or drop out of school altogether.

He praised the initiative for giving hope to learners from disadvantaged backgrounds and enabling them to pursue their academic dreams.

โ€œFor a long time, the community has faced challenges educating children because of lack of funds, but this programme has helped change that narrative. Many students who would otherwise have dropped out have been able to complete their studies,โ€ said Wafula.

He further called on well-wishers, philanthropists and organizations to come forward and support similar initiatives aimed at empowering learners through education.

Wafula added that the scholarship programme, which began three years ago, had already made a significant impact, with the 20 beneficiaries who sat for last yearโ€™s examinations qualifying to join university this year.

โ€œOn behalf of all schools in the area, I would say the programme has been very beneficial and has brought light to the community. We urge more sponsors to come out and support our students so that more children can access education,โ€ he said.

Chairman of the Rogers Bwosi Foundation scholarship programme, Rogers Bwosi, said investing in education was key to transforming communities and improving the future of young people.

He expressed satisfaction with the performance of the beneficiaries, noting that out of the 53 students supported by the programme, 20 had qualified to join university.

Bwosi noted that among the 20 students proceeding to university this year, five are girls while 15 are boys.

โ€œI am very happy with the performance of our students. Education is the best investment we can make for our children because once they complete their studies, they will be able to support their families and contribute positively to the development of the community,โ€ he said.

Bwosi also revealed that the foundation would assist the beneficiaries in applying for Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) funds to help finance their university education.

He added that the foundation plans to disburse Sh500,000 this year to continue supporting students in their academic journey.

One of the beneficiaries, Ivy Achieng, a former student at Kitagwa Secondary School, said the scholarship had greatly supported her education, especially during moments when she was unable to pay school fees.

She explained that before receiving the scholarship, she had been sent home several times due to lack of fees, which disrupted her studies.

โ€œThese scholarships motivated me to work harder in my studies, and I managed to score an A- in the examinations. My dream is to pursue surgical medicine at the university,โ€ said Achieng.

She encouraged other students facing financial challenges not to give up on their education but to remain committed to their studies.

Another beneficiary, Carlos Ooko, a former student of Gamalenga Secondary School, also said the scholarship came at a critical time when he was struggling to stay in school due to lack of funds.

He said he hopes to pursue clinical medicine at university so that he can return and serve his community in the future.

The Rogers Bwosi Foundation scholarship programme was officially launched in January 2023 and continues to support bright but financially disadvantaged students within the community.
