Security agencies intensify crackdown on illicit brews in Busia

Security agencies in Busia County have vowed to intensify their fight against illicit alcohol.

Led by Busia County Commissioner Mwachaunga Chaunga, the team managed to confiscate and destroy 10 litres of changaa at a premise in Bumala town, Butula Sub County on Tuesday.

“This crackdown is part of an ongoing effort to eliminate illegal alcohol from our county,’ he said adding that the team had received several reports on the dangers posed by changaa dens by the local residents.

Chaunga warned those manufacturing and selling illicit brews risked being arrested and taken to court.

“We will not allow such businesses to thrive at the expense of our people’s health and safety,” he said.

He encouraged residents to report any suspicious activities related to the sale of illicit brews to the relevant authorities, assuring them that their reports would be treated with confidentiality.

Residents of Bumala town welcomed the operation, saying that illicit alcohol has been a major challenge in the area, leading to increased cases of crime, domestic violence, and health complications.

“We have lost many young men to these brews. Some of them drink and lose control, engaging in criminal activities. We hope the government will continue with these operations until all illegal alcohol is wiped out.”

The crackdown in Bumala town is just one of many operations expected to take place across the county as part of a sustained campaign to rid the region of illegal alcohol.
