Seven people have been confirmed dead following day-long clashes pitting two communities in the Ongata Barikoi and Lolgorian in Transmara South Sub-County.
Confirming the incident, the Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Dr. Aldi Hassan, said seven people were killed and over 120 houses set ablaze during the Friday clashes, which left more than 260 families displaced.
The commissioner issued a stern warning to those fuelling the clashes, noting that there will be no sacred cows on matters of security. This comes as the police confirm the arrest of two people believed to be behind the communal incitement, as they pursue 20 others who are on the run.
“We witnessed deadly clashes yesterday where 7 people lost their lives and 120 houses burnt, leaving over 260 homeless,” said Commissioner Dr. Aldi.
“We have arrested two main suspects helping us with investigations, as we pursue 20 others who are on the run,” he added.
The RC also noted that an operation against illegal guns will be carried out for the time being, while calling on those in possession of illegal weapons to return them to government authorities.
Hundreds of residents have sought refuge in nearby schools as tensions escalate in a conflict reportedly instigated by a land dispute. The renewed clashes have so far led to the destruction of properties worth millions of shillings.
Dr. Aldi urged the residents to embrace peace and shun retaliatory attacks, noting that it will worsen the situation.
“I urge the residents here to embrace peace and dialogue as opposed to resorting to violence and clashes. The government offices are open for any burning issue residents have, and we will address it with the much-needed attention and urgency,” noted Dr. Aldi.
The commissioner took the opportunity to warn the political class and opinion leaders in the society not to escalate the matter out of proportion.
“I want to call upon leaders here to avoid politicising this matter; instead, let us sit and dialogue on it for a lasting solution,” noted RC.
