The Siaya County Executive Committee (CEC) has approved the construction of Kenya’s first nuclear power plant in the County.
According to a media dispatch from the County Secretary who is also the Head of Public Service, Joseph Ogutu, the Committee agreed on an engagement framework with the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) towards the establishment of the plant at an estimated value of 500 billion United States Dollars.
The dispatch, dated 5th September, 2025, said the plant will generate up to 7,000 jobs during construction and 700 permanent technical positions.
The project will provide stable, clean and industrial-scale power for Western Kenya and beyond and also spur infrastructure upgrades, skills training and long-term community benefits.
“It will also provide opportunity for public participation for all stakeholders during the project conceptualisation and design,” said the dispatch.
Meanwhile, the Siaya Cabinet has also approved the County Investment Handbook that profiles bankable projects worth 2.5 billion United States dollars.
According to Ogutu, the projects cut across various sectors such as agribusiness, healthcare, renewable energy, digital innovation, tourism, trade and infrastructure.
The County Secretary said that the Handbook has been developed in conjunction with the Kenya Investment Authority and provides investors with clear, credible and profitable opportunities within Siaya County.
“These two initiatives mark a historic turning point for Siaya and will attract global capital, generate jobs and open up new growth frontiers, while ensuring local communities are fully engaged and benefit directly,” he said.
