State operationalizes new administrative units in Malava

The government has sent Assistant County Commissioners (ACCs) to three newly created sub-counties in the Malava constituency in Kakamega County.

Western Regional Commissioner (RC) Irungu Macharia said that the Shivanga, Shirungu/Mugai, and Chesero divisions now have ACCs as the government moves to bring services closer to the people.

Speaking during a public baraza at the Matsakha trading center, Macharia said more locations and sub-locations have also been created in the area.

He said the government has also advertised positions for the newly created locations and sub-locations, urging eligible candidates to apply for consideration for appointment.

The operationalization of the new administrative units comes following a directive by the Principal Secretary of the Interior, Dr. Raymond Omollo, who visited the area early this month.

Dr. Omollo said this was part of the broader national plan to establish 1,105 new administrative units that include divisions, locations, and sub-locations in the 2024/2025 financial year.

On police recruitment, the RC said the National Police Service (NPS) has now shifted police recruitment to an online system in an effort to streamline the process.

He, however, cautioned that all other requirements and parameters, including medical tests, will be done to ensure only those who are physically fit are selected.

“So, this is to caution youth who engage in substance abuse that you risk losing out if medical tests show drug addiction,” he warned.

Macharia said the government has prepared the National Government Administration policy that proposes an implementation of monthly allowance for village elders.

“We are still awaiting Parliament to pass the policy, and once it’s done, you will start getting the allowance,” said the RC, as he responded to one of the village elders’ concerns.

“We also have regulations on National Government Administrative Units, which prioritize community requests, security concerns, and population, among other factors, in the establishment of new administrative units,” he added.

Speaking at the venue, National Police Service Commission western regional Coordinator Lilian Asienya said the Commission was still receiving views from the public on the proposed new recruitment process that will now be done online.

She said the Commission, whose mandate is to oversee the human resource functions of the National Police Service, is keen to ensure recruitment processes are transparent.

“Some of the views we received from members of the public was that medical tests on successful candidates be done on the ground and results released to ensure fairness,” she added.
