Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has announced a major milestone in the county’s healthcare delivery, revealing that the long-awaited Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Chuka County Referral Hospital will be officially opened on December 11, 2025.
Speaking at Kiereni PCEA church during celebrations to mark 100 years since its establishment, Governor Njuki said the new ICU would come fully equipped with a dialysis unit and would boost the facility’s capacity to handle emergency and critical care cases within the county.
“On December 11, we will open a modern ICU unit in Chuka with a complete dialysis section and a capacity of five beds. This will ease referrals and ensure our people can access specialised care closer to home,” he said.
The Governor further announced that on the same day, the county would unveil new amenity wards with a capacity of 20 beds, designed to provide private and more comfortable accommodation for patients who prefer enhanced medical services.
Njuki noted that the development is part of the county’s commitment to strengthening the health sector and reducing the burden on families forced to seek specialized treatment outside the region.
He emphasized that the county government has prioritised investment in health infrastructure, modern equipment, and personnel to ensure residents receive reliable, dignified, and affordable care.
The event, attended by local leaders, clergy, and congregants, also highlighted the church’s century-long role in shaping community values, education, and development across Tharaka Nithi.
Governor Njuki assured residents that the county would continue expanding services across all sub-counties as the government works towards a fully functional and accessible healthcare system.
