Three people perish in a grisly road accident in Makueni

Three people have lost their lives while 13 others sustained serious injuries after the matatu they were travelling in rammed into a trailer along Mombasa-Nairobi Highway in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The 5.30am accident occurred at Malili Market in Mukaa Subcounty when the Matatu driver rammed into the trailer from behind killing two people on the spot and another died while undergoing treatment.

The injured, who suffered fractures among other injuries, were rushed to Sultan Hamud and Kilungu Sub County hospitals for treatment.

“The driver may have been speeding leaving two people dying on the spot and one while undergoing treatment in hospital,” said Mukaa Sub County Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Mr. Buxton Mayabi who confirmed the accident on Tuesday.

“I appeal to motorists plying the busy highway to observe traffic rules and avoid speeding. Even if they drive at 80 kilometers per hour, they will reach their destination and prevent this kind of accidents,” Mayabi said.

The badly damaged vehicles Toyota Hiace registration number KDP 689Q, belonging to Naekana Sacco and Trailer Mercedes Benz KBH746/ZD1239, were towed to Salama Police station.

Meanwhile, the bodies have been moved to Sultan Hamud Subcounty Hospital mortuary for preservation awaiting autopsy.
