Tighten Oversight on County Govt, Baringo Senator-Elect Tasked

Members of Parliament (MPs) from Baringo County have tasked Senator-elect Vincent Chemitei to act on complaints from the public concerning poor service delivery within the county administration.

MPs Joseph Makilap (Baringo North), William Kamket (Tiaty) and Reuben Kiborek (Mogotio) reminded Chemitei that he has a huge task ahead of him concerning the ailing healthcare sector especially at the Baringo County Referral Hospital in Kabarnet town.

The leaders spoke at Kabarnet town CBD during a lap of honour for the United Democratic Alliance candidate who clinched the seat after garnering 55,246 votes.

David Kipruto of Republican Party came in second with 13,037 votes while the New Democrats candidate Benjamin Chebon emerged third with 2,863 in the by-election of six candidates concluded by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Makilap said the residents have mandated the incoming senator to oversee the administration of Governor Benjamin Cheboi to see to it that it serves them well.

He stated that at no time should the level four hospital as well as other health facilities across the county be faced with acute shortages of drugs and other essentials.

“When you are oversighting Kenya, start with Baringo County referral hospital and make the governor explain why it is not working properly,” he said.

A demand which was backed by Kamket who urged Chemitei to hit the ground running immediately after the swearing-in ceremony next week Tuesday.

He noted that the senator who replaces William Cheptumo who passed on early this year due to illness, has no privilege of relaxing.

The Tiaty MP said that the services being offered by the county administration must be felt at the grassroots.

“We want equalisation funds which are often misused, to be properly managed so that residents can realise value for money,” he said.

Kamket said that the senator has no excuse not to deliver yet he has the support and blessings from the six parliamentarians.

Kiborek on the other hand urged Chemitei to lobby both levels of government to fast-track existing and ongoing development projects within the county.

He urged residents to accord him the necessary support to deliver in the remaining months before the 2027 general elections.

Other leaders who were in the convoy included Baringo Woman Representative Florence Jematia, former senatorial aspirants Evans Mundulel and Reuben Chepsongol as well as Members of County Assembly Ayub Kibet (EwalelChapchap), Nixon Lemlem (Marigat) and Symon Kiplagat (Kabartonjo Ward).
