Two bodies retrieved from septic tank in Vihiga

Two bodies, one male and one female, were retrieved from a septic tank near the Kenya Women Finance Trust (KWFT) Bank in Mbale, Vihiga County, after a local pastor noticed a foul smell and flies around the area.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), together with local authorities, acted on information from the pastor and nearby residents to recover the bodies.

The male has been identified as 43-year-old Humphrey Barang’a, also known as Rasta, while the female remains unidentified. Both bodies have been moved to Vihiga Funeral Parlour, where they will undergo post-mortem examinations to determine the exact cause of death.

Assistant Chief of Mbihi Sub-location, Alex Omenda, confirmed that residents reported the discovery at 9 a.m., prompting security agencies to respond immediately and retrieve the bodies.

Barang’a’s family had reported him missing on December 24, 2025. His brother, David Kagai, said the family had been searching for him since his disappearance and expressed gratitude to the media and local authorities for their assistance.

The mother of the late Barang’a, Jane Kasigane Kagai, called for justice following her son’s mysterious death.

The incident comes shortly after a series of tragic events in the area, including the murder of a boda boda operator at Chavakali junction, a suicide at Chambiti, and another death in a borehole opposite Idavaga.

Authorities have urged residents with information related to the incident to come forward to assist investigations.
