Umoja Secondary boosts learning with new lab and student bursary

Umoja Secondary School in Limuru Constituency has launched a fully equipped science laboratory and received Sh816,000 in bursaries aimed at strengthening science education and improving student welfare.

The event was officiated by Limuru Member of Parliament John Kiragu Chege and attended by parents, teachers, students, and education stakeholders, who described the initiative as a major boost to learning outcomes in the area.

The new laboratory is expected to enhance practical learning by enabling students to conduct hands-on science experiments, a move anticipated to improve performance in national examinations. Speaking during the launch, MP Chege underscored the importance of sustained investment in education.

“Investment in education goes beyond classrooms; it builds dignity, creates opportunity, and secures the future of our children,” said Chege, adding that science facilities are critical in preparing learners for competitive careers.

Umoja Secondary School was established between 2013 and 2017 to address the lack of a  secondary school for local learners. Since then, the institution has recorded steady growth as it responds to the educational needs of the community. This year marked a historic milestone, with four students attaining university entry grades for the first time in the school’s history.

In addition to the laboratory and bursaries, funds have been allocated for the construction of a 12-door girls’ toilet block to improve sanitation and promote the dignity and wellbeing of learners.

The bursaries, funded through the Limuru National Government Constituencies Development Fund, will benefit all students at the day school.

Education stakeholders praised the school’s commitment to academic excellence, while a feeding programme in the school was credited with improving attendance, wellbeing, and learning outcomes, particularly among learners from vulnerable households.

Local leaders present reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Umoja Secondary School and other institutions across Limuru Constituency.
