The Uzalendo Half Marathon is set to bring hope to students in Baringo County as leaders and sponsors came together for a media briefing in Nairobi to officially launch the much-anticipated race that will take place on Saturday, July 19 in Eldama Ravine.
Presiding over the event, the Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage, Hannah Cheptumo, reminded Kenyans that the impact of their support will last for years.
“Let me take this opportunity to remind and tell you that some of the things that you do now will be remembered for many years to come,” reiterated the CS as she launched the Marathon.
Cheptumo announced that this year’s Marathon aims to raise Sh25 million to help bright but needy students complete their secondary education.
“This new plan fits well with my Ministry’s work because we are changing lives by giving scholarships and other help to students who really need it. The money raised will create a fund that will help students for many years. This is a big goal and it will help generations to come,” she said.
The CS thanked all sponsors and partners for their support and asked the organisers to spend the money wisely.
“I ask the School Board and the Education Foundation to use the money well and keep clear records. This way, the fund will grow and help more students faster. I also thank Athletics-Kenya for working with the organisers to make this Marathon a success,” said Cheptumo while also reminding all athletes to follow the rules and compete fairly.
She further urged the athletes to run clean, follow the rules set by Athletics Kenya, and work with the Anti-Doping Agency in order to help the Uzalendo Marathon meet international standards.
Speaking at the launch, the Principal Secretary (PS) for ICT and the Digital economy, Eng. John Tanui, praised the organisers for using technology to reach more people while keeping the process transparent.
“This Marathon is not just about running; it is about connecting people to a bigger purpose. Through technology, we can share the story, attract more sponsors, and make sure every shilling is accounted for. My Ministry will support this effort in every way needed,” affirmed Eng Tanui.
He also called on other sectors to learn from the Marathon’s approach, saying, “When we bring together sports, technology, and good leadership, we can change lives and give our children a better future.
Eldama Ravine Member of Parliament (MP) Musa Sirma thanked everyone who has supported the Marathon so far and called it a blessing to the community.
“Eldama Ravine is proud to host this great event. This Marathon shows what we can do when we stand together to help our children,” Sirma said and urged all residents and Kenyans of goodwill to show up, run, and help the community reach and even surpass the Sh25 million goal.
Further, the MP promised to help mobilise the local community to ensure the event is a success.
“This Marathon belongs to us all. We will make sure that every child who dreams of going to school gets that chance. Together, let’s make history for our children and our county,” he rallied.
