Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo and County Commissioner (CC) Mr. Ochilo Oyugi launched the fumigation exercise in Mbale town on Tuesday evenning.
The exercise is meant to cushion traders against infection by the novel Covid-19 that has already caused nine deaths since it was declared a national disaster.
According to the governor, departments of Health and Trade had procured adequate equipment and chemicals for the fumigation exercise.
“Major markets in all the five sub counties will be sterilised with chemicals,” assured Ottichilo.
Addressing area residents at the launch, Governor Ottichilo reiterated his administration’s commitment toward ensuring the county was Covid-19 free.
The governor said the county government had so far procured 2000 N95 masks, four oxygen concentrators, 50 crank beds, 100 mattresses, 200 bed sheets, 50 cellular blankets, water buckets, hand sanitisers and soap detergents for health professionals.
“In addition, the County Covid-19 Emergency Response Committee has authorised some of our vocational training centres to produce reusable facemasks en-mass, which will be distributed to our people free of charge,” disclosed Ottichilo.
He cited boda boda operators as the first beneficiaries of the facemasks, noting the group was at a higher risk of catching and spreading the contagious virus due to the nature of their work.
