The County Government of Vihiga continues to champion the preservation of indigenous culture and promote unity by supporting cultural activities across the region.
This commitment has been demonstrated through targeted initiatives aimed at safeguarding cultural heritage sites and supporting community-led cultural events.
Among these efforts is the fencing of several forests, including Kibiri Forest, which serves as a sacred circumcision shrine for the Tiriki community.

The circumcision rite, held every five years, remains a central pillar of Tiriki identity and cultural heritage.
The County’s cultural agenda was highlighted during the Tiriki Cultural Festival held at Hamisi Grounds in Gisambai Ward, Hamisi Sub-county, where Deputy Governor, Wilberforce Kitiezo presided over the event on Tuesday.
Speaking at the Festival, Kitiezo emphasised the importance of preserving cultural practices, noting that culture plays a vital role in shaping community values, strengthening social cohesion, and fostering a sense of belongingness.
The Festival brought the Tiriki culture to life through traditional dances, drumming, songs, symbolic performances, and an exhibition of traditional foods, allowing participants to experience the community’s rich indigenous cuisine.
Elders used the occasion to pass down cultural knowledge, while the youth actively engaged in celebrating and embracing their heritage.
Similarly, during the Bunyore Cultural Festival held at Ebusakami Primary School grounds, the Deputy Governor, representing Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo, called on residents to uphold peace, harmony, and co-existence as foundations for sustainable development in Vihiga County.
Further, the County government, through the Department of Gender, Culture, Youth and Sports, has constructed cultural centres across the County.

These Centres serve as important hubs for cultural meetings, preservation of artefacts, and promotion of indigenous heritage.
County officials note that preserving culture is essential for continuity and identity, particularly in the face of modernisation.
Cultural festivals and facilities also provide vital platforms for intergenerational interaction and the transfer of knowledge.
Through these initiatives, the County Government of Vihiga continues to foster pride in cultural identity while promoting unity, peace, and mutual respect among residents, positioning culture as a key driver of social cohesion and development.
