Vihiga County to benefit from academic partnership with India’s Vignan’s University

Vihiga County is poised to benefit from a groundbreaking international academic partnership aimed at fostering innovation, research, and skills development, following talks between Vihiga Governor Dr Wilber Ottichilo and senior representatives from India’s Vignan’s University.

On Tuesday, Governor Ottichilo hosted Mr Hari Murthy, Director of Velocity Project Management Limited, and Mr Srikant Nandigam, CEO of Vignan’s University, at the county headquarters in Mbale.

Vignan’s University, based in Andhra Pradesh, is renowned for its emphasis on science, engineering, and innovation.

The meeting focused on potential collaborations between Vignan’s University and local institutions, including Kaimosi Friends University and technical training institutes within the county.

The partnership aims to cover a broad range of disciplines such as agriculture and food technology, climate change adaptation, artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, and technological innovation.

“This collaboration will provide critical pathways for knowledge exchange, innovation, and capacity building,” said Governor Ottichilo. “It aligns perfectly with our vision of industry-driven learning under the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) model.”

Key features of the proposed partnership include: Joint research and academic publications, international hybrid conferences,

Faculty and student exchange programmes,Co-supervision of PhD research, Collaborative patents and Establishment of an Innovation and Incubation Hub in Vihiga to support youth entrepreneurship, applied research, and circular economy initiatives

Nandigam affirmed Vignan’s commitment to a long-term partnership, emphasising the university’s global mission to address real-world challenges through collaborative engagement.

“These initiatives will not only empower students and educators but will also drive sustainable development and job creation across the region,” he noted.

The discussions also touched on the potential establishment of a Calibration Centre at Vihiga County Referral Hospital to enhance biomedical engineering services and ensure efficient maintenance of hospital equipment.

Despite the ambitious plans, Governor Ottichilo acknowledged existing challenges such as infrastructural deficits and limited technical exposure for both trainers and learners, which may affect the scalability of vocational and technical programmes.

The partnership signals a significant move toward strengthening global academic networks and transforming Vihiga into a center of excellence in innovation and research-driven education.
