Vihiga farmers to benefit from subsidised livestock services

Farmers in Vihiga County are set to benefit from affordable livestock services, following a government initiative in line with President Dr. William Ruto’s announcement in mid-2025 on subsidised livestock breeding.

The County Coordinator, National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP), Charles Aluda, has confirmed that the subsidised vaccination exercise was already underway, where the government covers Sh110 per animal and farmers contribute only Sh50.

“The next phase focuses on breeding; sexed semen is now available at a subsidised price of just Sh1,000, down from Sh6,000,” Aluda said, adding, “This move will significantly boost livestock productivity and enhance farmers’ incomes.”

The initiative is part of the broader government’s commitment, aimed at improving livestock productivity countrywide by empowering local farmers, aimed at promoting sustainable livelihoods for the people.
