Vihiga gears for 10,000-seater Kidundu stadium

The government will soon embark on construction of the proposed 10, 000 seater Kidundu stadium to enable Vihiga County to host this year’s Madaraka Day national celebrations.

The County Executive for Finance and Economic Planning, Mulongo Onzere, has revealed that the official commencement date for the project will be Thursday, February 17, 2026, following a meeting between the area governor, Dr Wilber Ottichilo and PS Ministry of Defence, Dr Patrick Mariru.

Onzere said only recently they also held a meeting with the Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi and the residents of Kidundu concerning the upcoming project, where they all had to be in agreement.

He thanked the people of Kidundu for complying with the county’s directive on compensation plan, upon which the agreed payments amounting to Sh130 million had already been disbursed to section of the affected residents.

He added that they expect to have paid more claims by Wednesday next week to pave way for smooth commencement of the mega project.

“The project duration for the project is expected to be 90 days, just in time for the upcoming Madaraka day celebrations and possibly Labour Day celebrations,” said Onzere.

He further said that the Kidundu project will come with other fringe benefits like construction of other new roads in the surrounding areas and renovation of the existing infrastructure.

The County Executive castigated some local leaders who were apparently inciting area residents not to cooperate with the county government on implementation of the project

Onzere moved to assure the affected families that the government was not in a hurry to evict them from their farms. However, he urged them to start making arrangements to move out as soon as compensation is finalised to pave way for the life-changing project.
