Residents of Chango and Chambiti locations in Vihiga Sub-county have been cautioned against selling and taking illicit brew and drugs.
Speaking during a public meeting at Lilavo Friends Church in Chambiti, Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) of Vihiga Sub-county, Linet Orina, cautioned residents, especially the youth, against selling and taking illicit brew and bhang.
Orina said taking ‘chang’aa’ (a traditional illicit brew) and ‘bhang’ (cannabis sativa) contributes to insecurity in the area, saying once people are high on bhang, they end up causing a lot of havoc in the community and they cannot contribute to development in the society.
She added that taking bhang has disqualified many youths from joining the disciplined forces, saying that it stays in the bloodstream for several years.
The DCC further regretted that high cases of defilement, incest, theft and youths hovering on the road in the evening aimlessly are on the rise.
She advised resident communities to look for income-generating projects, form groups, register with the Department of Social Services and look for government funding, such as the grants and loans.
Ms. Orina advised youths to use the smartphones to access online jobs, saying plans are underway to construct a digital hub between Vihiga Prison and the County Commissioner’s residence, which will enable youths to access the internet.
Alice Musila, an officer from the Office of the Attorney General, Vihiga County, called on residents to register their marriages.
Musila sensitized residents on their mandate, including handling land and property cases, issues to do with Public Trustee Funds, registering marriages and defending public servants when they have differences with the citizens.
