The Wajir County Government has launched its annual Ramadhan Iftar Programme targeting 40,000 vulnerable households across all 30 wards, as part of efforts to cushion residents from the effects of prolonged drought.
Governor Ahmed Abdullahi flagged off the programme, announcing the distribution of 915 tonnes of food supplies comprising sifted maize, fortified porridge flour, dates and cooking oil.
The governor said the programme will also benefit orphans in children’s homes, patients undergoing dialysis and persons living with disabilities.
“This initiative has been our tradition every Ramadhan, a time when we reaffirm our commitment to compassion and solidarity with the most vulnerable members of our community,” said Abdullahi.
“This year’s launch comes at a particularly difficult period as our people continue to grapple with the devastating effects of drought that has disrupted livelihoods across the county.”
He noted that the county government has intensified drought mitigation measures alongside food assistance, including the maintenance and servicing of boreholes and the provision of free water trucking to the hardest-hit areas.
“For this reason, we have strengthened our response through additional interventions to ensure that no family is left without access to food and water during this Holy Month,” he added.
The governor also expressed appreciation to the National Government for its partnership and continued support in addressing the drought situation.
“As we observe Ramadhan, we pray that this sacred month brings relief, hope and renewed strength to all our residents,” he said.
The annual Iftar Programme is a key component of the county’s social support initiatives, providing timely assistance to vulnerable households during the fasting month.
