Two senior Western Kenya leaders are divided over whether or not to hold a referendum to amend the Kenyan Constitution.
Vihiga Senator, Godfrey Osotsi, has strongly opposed calls for a referendum, stating that it is an attempt by Kenya Kwanza leaders to extend their term limits under the guise of constitutional reforms.
Osotsi stressed the importance of implementing the recommendations by the NADCO report, which was as a result of a national dialogue and offers practical solutions for governance, electoral justice, inclusivity, and economic reforms.
Osotsi firmly believes that the focus should also be on implementing the Ten-Point Agenda agreed upon by ODM and UDA parties.
Meanwhile, Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi, has called for a constitutional review, stating that after 15 years, it is time to formalize the positions of the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Official Opposition, to ensure every region has representation in the government.
Mudavadi emphasized the need for national unity and inclusivity in government.
The debate in Vihiga County, highlights the differing views among leaders on the way forward for Kenya’s Constitution.
While some advocate for a referendum to make necessary changes, others argue for the implementation of existing agreements, to move the country forward.
The diverse views underscores the complexity of the constitutional reform process and the importance of finding common ground to address the country’s challenges.
