Women in Birongo ward, Nyaribari Chache Constituency, Kisii county were treated to goodies worth Sh. 6m by the office of their Woman Rep in what has been viewed as a women’s empowerment activity during the harsh economic times.
Over three thousand women were assembled at Taracha grounds in the ward where they were issued with water tanks, cheques, milk goats, hash avocado seedlings and shoes, as individuals or groups.
Speaking during the event, the woman Rep Ms. Doris Aburi noted that at least 15 tanks with a 10,000-liter capacity and worth Sh. 100,000 each, were given out to various groups, while 145 widows were issued with milk goats.
Furthermore, Aburi also said that 3,000 avocado seedlings were given to farmers, besides several cheques worth up to Sh. 100,000 which were issued to various groups in the area.
Besides advising the nearby Taraja Primary and Secondary Schools, Aburi also took time to discuss Gender Based Violence, to stop spouses from fighting at home among other forms.
Aburi lashed out at her critics, whom she accused of perpetually destroying her office to ensure that residents did not receive services as required, especially during the recent ‘maandamano’.
She said that her office had been destroyed five times of which she had reported to the police, whereas vulnerable groups like the PWDs and widows among others, will not be able to receive services after her office was attacked recently; until it was repaired.
Helina Kwamboka, an agricultural extension officer called on farmers to space their avocado fruit seedling at 5m squared because they become bushy quite fast.
Lastly, she advised the farmers to dig a hole for the seedlings at two feet, and not in water logged areas or clay soil, but loamy and sandy soils where they thrive best.
