Youth introduced to integrated farming system

Vihiga County has identified Integrated farming system as a viable option for creating gainful skills to young ones

Schools are reopening, and Nyang’ori boys’ high school students are introducing an integrated farming system under the Norwegian Agency for Development Corporation (NORAD) Advancing Resilient Nutrition Sensitivity Aquaculture project. (ARNSA) project implemented under the Aquaculture Business Development Program.

This integration of agriculture aims to equipping students with knowledge and skills related to farming techniques, preparing them for a future in agriculture.

For instance, a farming system approach that utilizes a circular system where waste from one component (poultry) becomes a resource for another (fish) which in return benefits the vegetable component.

The three grow in a symbiotic environment thus increasing diversity and yielding multiple productions that cut down on the costs of fertilizers and fish feeds hence maximizing on the benefits

The County Project Coordinator Wilson Munala says the system is aimed at reducing waste, promoting sustainability and improving resource efficiency.

“This kind of farming provides access to a variety of food for a more diverse and nutritious diet. Munala said.”

He said planning the layout of different components requires careful consideration of space plus enough water for both fish and vegetables is crucial.

On the other hand, Principle Nyang’ori boys peter Lunani confirmed that students are very passionate about that kind of farming system that will introduce them to a holistic, sustainable and efficient approach to learning about agriculture.

”Students will gain practical skills in various farming systems/techniques including livestock management, crop production and aquaculture through hands on experience’. He spoke

He challenged other neighbouring schools to adopt the same. Other institutions aiming at practicing integrated farming systems include Moi Girls Vokoli
