Youth polish police boots in symbolic peace gesture

As part of International Youth Week celebrations, Uasin Gishu County youth participated in International Youth Week celebrations by polishing police officers’ shoes, aiming to improve relations and bridge perceived gaps between the police and young people.

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi praised the youth initiative, describing it as a sign of renewed goodwill between the two groups.

“Youths who once clashed with the police are now displaying a positive relationship and readiness to move forward,” he said.

Mwanthi emphasized the police’s commitment to maintaining safety in Uasin Gishu, urging public cooperation and reporting any threats for immediate action.

Speaking during the event, Uasin Gishu County Chief Officer for Youth Affairs and Sports, Victorine Kapkiai, said the week’s activities began with youth polishing police officers’ shoes in a symbolic gesture to foster mutual respect and strengthen relations between the two groups.

He added that the initiative seeks to bridge perceptions and promote collaboration in maintaining peace and order.

She noted that the county is working with community-based organizations, local communities and other stakeholders to address challenges facing the youth.

“The governor is discouraging destructive acts like property damage. Our goal is to help young people engage in productive activities and secure a better future,” she added.

On the other hand, Fabish Ouma, chairperson of the Vijana ni Nguzo Movement, said the event was meant to strengthen community–police relations and recognize officers’ role in maintaining law and order.

“We value our officers’ service as fathers, mothers, brothers, and sisters, and will always stand with them in building a safe, well-managed country,” he said.

Collins Kemboi, one of the event’s organizers, noted that youth have often been perceived as agents of violence and exploited for personal interests.

“Today, we have changed that narrative to foster cooperation between the police and the youth, break down barriers and build positive relationships starting with our police officers,” he said.

Kemboi announced the launch of a Youth Ambassadors of Peace and Goodwill initiative, aiming to address emerging issues, promote economic growth, and promote peaceful coexistence within the community.

The activity was part of the International Youth Week celebrations, running from August 8–12 under the theme Bridging the Gap, which focuses on closing the inter-generational divide.
